In an opinin piece in today's
News Journal (no link available just this minute),
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) gets the situation right on saying, "Health care is more than a privilege." Good for him. At last a real voice speaking for and to the people of the nation instead of leaning to the camp of the insurance and pharmaceutical industries. At a time when we have nearly 50 million uninsured in the nation with more than 100,000 of them in Delaware (including 8% of Delaware's children) there must be real change.
Today the insurance industry takes approximately 1/5 of all dollars spent on health insurance for profit and administrative costs. Medicare manages the same service for costs that range under 5%. Senator Sanders among others is pressing for a public option to include Medicare-like coverage for all who wish to join. I support him in his move. We, the people, can no longer afford to support the insurance and pharmaceutical industries if we wish to improve the state of our national health.
Today the United States spends more money for health care per citizen than any other nation in the world. For that expense we rank 37th in overall health according to the
World Health Organization. This is intolerable on so many levels words escape me.
Businesses as well as individuals suffer today from the lack of a national health care plan. Small as well as large businesses cannot compete on a level playing field when other developed nations offer health care for which our industries must pay and then recoup those costs in the sale of their products.
We were promised change in the runup to the election. Now is the time to hold the administration and all our elected officials accountable. Insist today on full reform of the health care system including a public option. We as a nation deserve no less.
Peace.
