Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday introduced a bill prohibiting federal courts from ordering the release and transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees into the country.Using the same nomenclature put forth by Bushco, the Representatives claim the detainees have no rights to legal process under our laws. The Bush administration made up the term, "enemy combatant," in order to bypass both American legal systems and the Geneva Conventions. Now the House Republicans want to make the term a part of our legal system.
If our nation is ever to be one of liberty and justice for all in the future we must not take this course. Most of the Guantanamo detainees are not now and never were a threat to the United States. Many are held on trumped up charges. If there is real evidence of their guilt then the least they deserve is a fair and open trial. If there is no evidence of illegal activity by any detainee, that person deserves to be set free.
The cry that releasing the detainees will somehow endanger our freedoms in this country is fearmongering at its very worst. There is plenty of evidence to show wrongful detention does in fact produce terrorists in reaction to the mistreatment. Justice and truth are the only courses that promise any measure of safety in our future.
For more than 200 years prior to the advent of the Bush regime the nation stood for liberty and justice. There is not one reason to believe we cannot stand another 200 years with the same guiding principles.
Peace.

Your last paragraph is the perfect rebuttal...
A Republican is a fool to jump on the argument that torture protects
American citizens...
LOL, with tongue in cheek, I must admit their statement would be true, if we had water-boarded large numbers of Republican voters before the 2000 election, and thereby prevented the complete destruction of the American economy courtesy of the Republican Party's financial policy.....
kavips,
But the right wing needs no facts. They are all about their noise machine. Whatever is said by the pundits must be true because they are on TV.
